Evelyn (Eve) Smith is formerly the Secretary of the Booker Prize Foundation, and has been involved in governance and high-level administration and policy setting of a variety of charity and not for profit organisations in the UK. Her background is as a lawyer, and she was a partner in a commercial law firm in the City of London. Her present portfolio of roles is undertaken as a freelance consultant. In addition to her focus on literature through the Man Booker Prizes and the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, she was for 12 years a trustee and vice chairman of a medical research charity, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, whose scientific output has been internationally acclaimed. She continues to be involved in governance work with 2 charities with an international engagement focused on healthcare and long term medical conditions.
